ONLY ONE SNAG . . . ” YOU PAY
TOO MUCH
IN PRIZES “
STEADILY growing in size and popu-
larity, Gwinear Agricultural Association’s
show and gymkhana was another huge
success on Saturday at Mr. H. Rogers’s
Lanyon Manor site. Revived three years
ago after an 18-year lapse, the show added
photography classes to extended sections
for horses, domestic products, handicraft
and children’s work. There were also
shows for gods and floral art.
The association have a big memership,
yet more than 1,000 people paid to see the
show. The entry fee was 5p up, but gate
taking were double those of last year.
Maj. E. M. Gardner, joint secretary, thought
that overall the entries were up by about 30 per
cent. ” We are doing very well indeed, ” he said.
” From two shows we have £1,000 in reserve.”
Mr. R. C. Mitchell, treasurer, said it cost
at least £750 to put the show on. One major new
expense was £150 it cost to
hire a marquee for the mini-
shows. Attractions included the
colourful Camborne Majorettes
and an appearance by Mrs.
Rosemary Whitten (Troon) and
Sweet William, her donkey, show
began their trip to London for
RNLI funds on Monday.
The only discord of the day
involved a problems with British
Show Jumping Association regis-
tered riders or horses and the
show’s prize money.
Show officials explained that the
BSJA rules stipulated that regis-
tered riders or hoses must not
take part in any non-affiliated
show, with more than £3 in prize-
money.
Not affiliated
Gwinear, who are not affiliated,
offered a cup to the winner of
the open jumping class and £4
as a second prize. To take part,
BSJA riders feared they would
be reported and have problems
for the rest of the season. Eight
decided to retrieve their entry
fee, and withdraw from the com-
petition.
Show officials were not pre-
pared to lower the prize money,
President, Mr. Charlie James said:
“ We make our own rules and we
shall do it our way.” He did not
think there would be any change
next year.
The open event was won by
Julie Turtle, on Tilby. Last out
of the seven in a jump-off, she
had the only clear round.
More than 40 were in the
children’s jumping class which
saw Sandra Lello take first and
second with clear rounds on
Titania and Valentine, Julie
Turtle was third.
Horse entries
More than 100 horses produced
over 400 entries in the gymkhana
which spread over most of the
day. Mr. John Power, and his
daughter Jill, from Kehelland,
were judges and gave a cup for
most points. It went to Sarah
Moyse (12), of Hayle.
