GWINEAR SHOW

SHORT takes

● JUDGE Mike Slavin chose a pedi-
gree boxer from Falmouth as best
dog at the show.
Belonging to Mrs D Tonkin, the
boxer illustrated how good breed-
ing always showed through, said Mr
Slavin.
He was also very impressed with
the winner of the junior handler
section, Miss Haydney from Illogan.
The handling section is to demon-
strate the owner’s control of the
dog, explained dog section secre-
tary Valerie Gill.
“You could take in the scruffiest
urchin under the sun and still win
if you show the judge how well you
can handle it,” she added.

● THE focus of attention in the pet
section was a large and very friendly
muscovy duck belonging to two sis-
ters from Reawla.
Sebastian, who is about seven-
months-old, won a prize for Hayley
and Amy Edwards, who are aged 11
and seven.
Children queued by his cardboard
box to stroke the enormous white,
red-billed duck, which lives in the
garden and has a water-filled bath to
swim in.

THE domestic entries marquee
was packed for most of the day.
Visitors were able to admire —
an incredible variety of
entries, from artwork to splits
and cauliflower pyramids.Goonhavern was judged the
best WI for a stunning tableau
illustrating Mousehole’s Tom
Bawcock’s Eve. Hevva cake,
fish head-studded star-gazy pie
and Cornish spruce, a ginger,
lemon and sugar drink, were
used to conjure up the atmos-
phere of the event.

Mother and son duo Barbara
and Fred Pascoe, who live at
Carnhell Green, won first
prizes for the best woman’s
pasty and best man’s pasty.
This was not the first time the
pair had scooped both sec-
tions, said domestic section
secretary Jenny Bird, who
summed their household up as
“a good pasty-making family”.

Cacti of all shapes and sizes
caused a few chuckles – in par-
ticular a large and remarkably-
formed. mammilaria matudae.

which should have won a prize
for amusement value alone,
commented one admiring
domestic tent visitor.
Dandelion, gooseberry and
banana wines tempted passers-
by, the youngest of whom were
visibly itching to lift the
hygienic cover from the cake
section and help themselves.
Children from Gwinear Show
submitted scores of entries,
including some stunning art-
work.Deborah Eva, aged 12, of
Camborne, thought up 102
items beginning with the letter
B, and managed to cram them
all into a matchbox, thus win-
ning that class for the second
year in a row.

Tania Bryant, who jointly.
judged the children’s section
with Jean Cock, admitted she
had not emptied the matchbox
and counted every item — a
shame because this reporter
was interested to know how
Deborah had fitted a bear and
a book into the tiny space.

Green, celebrate another pasty victory.  Picture – Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Press
